Lets talk about Asbestos

INFORMATION ON ASBESTOS (ACM)
Absestos is commonplace in many NZ homes built or that had work done between the 1950's and 2000's (while production of asbestos was stopped in 1987, building materials were still in rotation for some time).

Asbestos can be hidden in many areas of a home as you can see in this diagram provided by Worksafe NZ below.

When we complete our property inspections, we include looking for suspected asbestos products and their currnet condition to ensure you have all the information you need.  Adam is qualified in Asbestos identification and safety procedures, and we offer sample testing for clients who would like confirmation via a labratory.

The risk is low if it is in good condition and often no immediate action is required , however like all building substrates, Asbestos does breakdown and if damaged or in poor condition is considered a health risk.

If you plan to renovate or make alterations there are rules that now apply to contractors and for removal if asbestos is confirmed on your property.

There are many resources on asbestos in NZ, and we have linked  a few below for you.  Also, feel free to pick up the phone for a chat anytime

In this podcast we cover a range of frequent questions such as:
Asbestos – What is it?  How can I tell if my property has it, and what does it mean if it does?
Where it can be commonly found and how to have it checked out/tested safely (visual inspection included in inquest reports and invasive testing can be done with homeowner permission).
Why is there a current focus on it?  (Worksafe and the governor general signing off on legislation this year for ACM as some products are coming to the end of their serviceable life).
If you are a homeowner and want to do renovation work – what does the ACM legislation mean for you and tradespeople carrying out work in your home?
Would you by a home built with asbestos materials?
How much does it cost to remove asbestos materials? (Eg. A roof with tricky access).
My asbestos test has come back positive, what can I expect now? (Hint: It’s all about context and condition).
